How Can Having a Conservatory Benefit Your Health?
We all know how too much sun is harmful to your skin, but did you know the right balance of sun has several mood-enhancing and health benefits? Sunlight cues certain areas in the retina which then triggers the release of serotonin in our brain. Serotonin is associated with boosting a person’s mood and helping them feel focused. When sun exposure is lacking, your serotonin levels can dip and therefore bring you down emotionally.
Additionally, moderate levels of sun exposure (ultraviolet-B radiation) triggers the body to create vitamin D which plays a big role in bone health. Low vitamin D levels in children has been linked to the childhood disease rickets and bone-deteriorating diseases such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia in adults.
While too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, a decent UV light intake is actually thought to be a preventative to other cancers (such as colon, ovarian, pancreatic etc), is used to heal some skin conditions (such as psoriasis, eczema, jaundice and acne) and could potentially become a more widely used treatment for other conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis, systemic lupus erythematosus and inflammatory bowel disease).
Light therapy isn’t for everyone with these conditions and only a doctor or dermatologist can officially recommend this treatment. Conservatories and glass rooms are one great way to bask in the sun, just remember to protect your skin and enjoy its benefits in moderation.
